Bayero University Kano, popularly known as BUK among students, is a public federal university that is located in Kano, a major northern state amongst the northern states located in Nigeria.
Bayero University Kano was established in 1960 as Bello College, and it was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College in order to avoid conflict in name with Ahmadu Bello University, which was set up in 1962.
Bayero University Kano served as one of the faculties under Ahmadu Bello University until 1975, when it was given the right to award degrees and even established its own governing council, but the control of Ahmadu Bello University over the institution was finally broken in 1980.
The transition of Bayero University Kano from a college in 1977 was because of the federal government that transitioned all university colleges to fully pledged universities.
